Like every year, Tata NYK Shipping has planted several hundred saplings to protect the Sundarbans on June 5, the day of World Environment Day. The saplings were planted in Ghoshkhal area of Haripur gram panchayat in Namkhana block of the remote Sundarbans. This area is in close proximity to the Haripur Sea beach by the Bay of Bengal. Tata NYK’s initiative was appreciated by the locals and they promised to take care of the saplings planted till the tree grows tall and become self-dependent. Once fully grown the saplings have the potential of resisting high winds common to this area and will not only help resist soil erosion but also will host a number of endangered avian species typical to this area.
